BALLROOM CULTURE
Ballroom is an LGBTQ+ culture that originated in the 1920s in the United States.
It emerged as a response to the racial and sexual discrimination that too many people in the community faced.
ORIGINS
- 1920s: The first 'balls' appear in Harlem, organized by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
- 1980s-90s: The movement gains momentum and becomes more visible thanks to films like 'Paris Is Burning' (1990) and Madonna's 'Vogue
HOUSES
Houses are chosen families for many members of the ballroom community, who may have been rejected by their biological families due to their sexual orientation and gender identity, for example.
BALLS
Balls are competitions where participants walk in various categories. At the Break The Internet Kiki Ball event, the categories are: Face Production, Sex Siren, Beginners Runway, Beginners Performance, Realness, Runway, Bizarre, Best Dressed, OTA Performance, Body, Best Clip of the Night.
INFLUENCE
Ballroom culture has had a major influence on popular culture. Voguing, popularized by Madonna in 1990, is a prime example. More recently, shows like 'Pose' and voguing competitions like 'Legendary' have brought this culture into the spotlight.
IMPACT
Ballroom culture has also played a crucial role in the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights and against racism. It provides a safe space for self-expression and the celebration of marginalized identities, as well as a place for community support in the face of crises such as the AIDS epidemic
Categories
Face Production
Inspiration from iconic music videos that have left an indelible mark on pop culture. Think of influential visuals like "Telephone," "Hit Me Baby One More Time," and "Wrecking Ball."
Sex Siren
It’s time for an unforgettable OnlyFans collaboration! The walkers will embrace the allure of classic adult film scenarios, from iconic fantasies like pizza delivery, repair person, maid, and more.
Beginners Runway
The walkers will make it clear that their walk is the only one that matters, and they’ll need to bring it in either white and gold or blue and black
Beginners Performance
In an era of rainbow-washing, where brands superficially adopt symbols of pride without meaningful action, it’s time to reclaim authenticity.
Realness
In the digital age, aesthetics define our online personas. For this category, the walkers showcase realness inspired by distinct and iconic internet aesthetics.
Runway
Celebrities from around the world have stunned the internet with unforgettable magazine covers. In this category, the walkers will channel the essence of viral magazine covers. They will reference an iconic cover that has made waves online and create a runway look inspired by its style and impact.
Bizarre
Imagine the bizarre scenario of two internet memes creating one big baby. In this category, the walkers will design a look that merges elements from their two favorite memes, showcasing how they combine these iconic references into a single, surreal outfit that defies expectations.
Best Dressed
The walkers have just secured their first brand influencer trip to a luxurious beachside location. Imagine them creating dazzling content in a picturesque gazebo, adorned with opulent gold jewelry
OTA Performance
Inspired by the playful world of emojis. This performance look will incorporate colors and symbols reminiscent of popular emoji characters.
Best clip of the night
Where do we go after the balls? You know the answer: Instagram stories, walkers’ profiles, the recorded livestream. Online clips are a platform highlighting the talent, creativity and skills amongst our communities.
OUR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Ballroom culture is a rich tradition of performance, community support, and fighting discrimination.
It continues to evolve and influence culture while providing a vital space for celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ identity and resilience.
As a certified LGBTBE® business, TUX Karma wishes to highlight this amazing community by sponsoring the Break The Internet Kiki Ball Room event.
Remous
Remous is a series of events designed to overcome isolation, encourage encounters, and provoke conversations that challenge mindsets and enable us to move forward.
At TUX, we hope that events such as Remous, which are unusual now, will become the rule in our industry and elsewhere.
